Hamilton
County Job and Family Services (HCJFS): An Update on Cincinnati's Social
Services
Mike Boehmer, APR, Public Information Specialist for HCJFS,
came to speak at our club meeting on October 29th about the status of
social services in Cincinnati through HCJFS. The HCJFS "administers
federal, state and local programs for those in need. The department helps
with local child protection, adult protection, child care, tuberculosis
control, child support enforcement, workforce development, cash assistance,
food stamp disbursement and Medicaid coverage.
In 2006, the child support program served 1 in 4 residents,
the Medicaid program served 1 in 7 residents, and the food stamps program
served 1 in 10 residents", among many other programs. You can read
more about their services in the 2006
Annual Report
Their current campaign is trying to get more people to
adopt children from the Cincinnati area. They currently have 280 kids
waiting for adoption, more than 200 are between the ages of 12 and 17.
There are currently 300 foster families in the Cincinnati area."The
Children's Services division of Hamilton County Job and Family Services
cares for hundreds of children from a variety of economic, social, racial
and ethnic backgrounds. Most have been abused or neglected.
"To some [adoption is] just a word they hear from
time to time. But for some children in Hamilton County, adoption is a
dream - one that you could turn into reality.
Kids who have been part of the child welfare system can
have very specialized needs. But there's one thing all of them need: a
loving, permanent home. Learning more about the process is the first step
to making one of the most important decisions of your life. Click
